Fairy Army recruitment slogans? [27 Jul 2010|08:04pm]

aloha_d20
Well met, glamourbombers,

Inspired by the UK's Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army, I'm working on designing some mock recruitment posters for an "Anachronistic Anarchistic Rebel Fairy Army."

So, my glamourcomrades, this is where you come in. I naturally need some recruitment slogans, in the style of "Be All You Can Be", etc. but I seem to be woefully uncreative when it comes to putting a glamourous twist on the things. Any suggestions? Best if they're recognizably based on "real life" military recruitment slogans (preferably U.S., as that's where I'm based), in order to get the point across, but anything's great. The less happy-shiny-glittery, the better, though (nothing against glitteriness, it just doesn't really suit the tone of this mission).

Suggestions on poster designs/etc. are also more than welcome! I plan on providing the posters for everyone's printing and posting pleasure when they're finished, so keep an eye out.

Peace,
Lieutenant M. Kitchenette

Goblin Market News [27 May 2010|03:59pm]

mastorcastor

Sorry that I have been away from the community for a while.

We now have a Goblin Market at the Phoenix Faerie Festival, with the next one planned for 11/20 & 11/21.

Further details here. )
I run the show as Market Master Mastor Castor, using facial appliance from costumesandprops.com and thescreamteam.com.

There is no money allowed in Market, everything must be traded for.

We ended up with about 12 different "vendors", one pair of them just showing up with goods to trade and ended up setting up their own stall on salvaged carpet.

We used many salvaged materials to build the tables, display cases, and even made a large canopy out of stitched together human clothing. A large salvaged lazy susan was combined with a x-mas tree stand to make a rotating display case for jewelry.

Once the sun went down, we lit up beautiful miniature lanterns, black lights and had a bubble fogger, as well as had DJ DaEmonIAK spinning goblin, troll and faerie music.

This year, we are going to have our own cage/stage to trap entertainers inside, as well as a goblin juke band with homemade instruments.

If anyone is in the Southwest and wants to get involved, just drop me a line.

Faery Handbook Idea [10 May 2010|10:49pm]

[ mood | energetic ]

Whilst at Borders a wee bit ago I saw these tiny tiny adorable journals. Now I thought they were cute...though kind of expensive (but c'mon they're cute so it's fine) but couldn't think of what to do with one. Recently I was thinking about how they would make the most perfect GlamourBomb! Since they're perfectly faery sized you could fill one with quotes, pictures, stickers, and other fun things and leave a few in someplace they'll be disovered. Not sure if anyone has thought of this before (and I hope not because I feel really clever at the moment *lol*).

Sound like a good idea?
Any ideas for pages for in such a book?
Where to leave such a thing?

I'm kind of an agnostic when it comes to fairies, but i thought this video was relevent to this community, not to mention cute:

There is an alleged dead fairy body in it, so i hope no one is too traumatized by that image.

Hi, everyone. How are you doing?

Well recently when both my parents were out all day, and I had time I made some glamourbomb materials. I painted some pennies and made some fairly nice burned paper. I want to do something special with the paper espcialy but I have no ideas. Help please!

I am really excited about spring arriving. It keeps stopping by here, but I don't think it's here to stay yet. Any ideas to bring in the springtime spirit and encourage it to stay?

Planning a Goblin Market [11 Feb 2010|10:33pm]

kestrelct
I'm beginning to plan out a Goblin Market to throw downtown at some point when the weather is better -- I've ordered little glass bottles to fill with things like elbow grease and happiness, I've made a list of prices (a song, a memory, a strand of hair), and I'm getting really excited about it. The biggest hole in my plans are what I'm going to look like. What are your suggestions for clothes, makeup, and general awesomeness for a goblin market vendor? I have really long hair, which I'm thinking I'll do in something involving lots of little accent braids and probably ribbons, but my only other ideas are gold shimmery eye makeup (I'm pale, strawberry blonde, hazel/green eyes), and probably a cloak. Any and all input is welcomed! Thanks!

I think this would make a perfect glamourbomb. You would have to list the writer's name, copyright, and website, but that shouldn't be a problem. I'm unsure how the writer found me. I can't find where my journal was cached.

What do you think?

Mermaid Sightings Claimed in Israel [14 Aug 2009|10:43pm]

fishberryjam

Locals and tourists in the Israeli town of Kiryat Yam have been flocking to the coast in hopes of glimpsing a creature that most people believe only exist in fairy tales.

An alleged mermaid, said to resemble a cross between a fish and a young girl, only appears at sunset. It performs a few tricks for onlookers before disappearing for the night.

One of the first people to see the mermaid, Shlomo Cohen, said, "I was with friends when suddenly we saw a woman laying on the sand in a weird way. At first I thought she was just another sunbather, but when we approached she jumped into the water and disappeared. We were all in shock because we saw she had a tail."

The sightings apparently began several months ago.

$1 million reward

The town's tourism board is of course delighted with their newfound fame and local mystery fauna. Taking a cue from the town of Inverness, Scotland (on the shore of Loch Ness), the Kiryat Yam government has offered a $1 million reward for the first person to photograph the creature. Town spokesman Natti Zilberman thinks the reward money is well-spent. "I believe if there really is a mermaid then so many people will come to Kiryat Yam, a lot more money will be made than $1 million."

Of course, if the mermaid does not exist -- perhaps it is a hoax, an optical illusion, or a simple misperception of a known animal -- then the town's reward money will remain safe and unclaimed, while the economy benefits from the influx of tourists vying to get a photo that will leave them set for life.

It's not clear what people are seeing, though the power of suggestion and imagination can be strong. Identifying animals in water is inherently problematic, since eyewitnesses by definition are only seeing a small part of the creature. When you add in the factor of low light at sunset and the distances involved, positively identifying even a known creature can be very difficult -- to say nothing of a mythological one!

Mermaids have long held fascination for seafaring peoples. There are a few dozen significant historical claims of actual mermaid sightings. Most of them are clearly myths and legends, such as "true" stories about lovely young women who married sailors but were later discovered to be shape-shifting mermaids (such as in the film "Splash").

Other reports date back centuries, and offer no proof or evidence other than a curious story. For example, a Capt. Richard Whitbourne claimed he saw a mermaid in Newfoundland's St. James harbor in 1610. Another story, from 1830 Scotland, claimed that a young boy killed a mermaid by throwing rocks at it; the creature looked like a child of about 3 or 4, but had a salmon's tail instead of legs. The villagers supposedly had it a funeral and buried it in a small coffin.

P.T. Barnum's mermaid

Hoaxers have worked to satisfy the public's appetite for mermaids; the fact that none have ever actually been found is only a minor inconvenience.

The great showman P.T. Barnum introduced a mermaid to astounded crowd in the 1840s: his infamous "FeeJee Mermaid", actually a taxidermy fake. The head and torso of a small monkey was grafted onto the body and tail of a fish. It was bizarre and strange - --certainly nothing anyone had seen before - but a far cry from the banners and posters suggesting a beautiful, half-naked woman.

Other mermaid fakes appeared throughout the centuries. Some were manatees that had been dressed up to resemble a human form and exhibited for profit.

Whether the Israeli mermaid sighting is genuine, a hoax, or an innocent mistake exploited for tourism, the reality of finding a real mermaid might be different than people imagine, as shown by a song from the Newfoundland band Great Big Sea, which sings folk-rock versions of traditional sea shanties. One of their most popular songs, titled "The Mermaid," tells of a lonely sailor who courts a mermaid:

"I love the girl with all me heart / But I only like the upper part / I do not like the tail!"

There's a naked faery running around somewhere. [03 Aug 2009|03:30pm]

[ mood | amused ]

Just joined, so, um...hi. I actually would've joined over a month ago or so, but I've been busy reading all the posts, from day 1 onwards. If you're interested, I'm still not caught up. I'm in like, 2003 still. This might take me a while.

But I've read the lists of glamourbombs that people have compiled, and something struck me.

Someone once suggested to sew a little fairy hat with a bell and leave it dangling from a tree. Why not take this a step further? Sew an entire outfit - maybe even little cloth shoes? - and hang them on a tiny clothesline. This works best if it's planted around a body of water. Conversely, leave the clothes where there's no water to be found, and let whoever finds it wonder ;D I figure the clothesline could be some fishing line stretched between two sticks, well, sticking out of the ground, or you could replace the fishing line with a slender twig propped between two Y shaped sticks.

And because I still have about a billion posts to read through...any Houston/Sugar Land glamourbombers?

Rescue party saves 1500 gnomes

About 1500 garden gnomes have been saved from the scrapheap after an 800km rescue mission. The impressive collection of small cement people was left orphaned after the death of an elderly Cootamundra woman, with the new owners of her property not enamoured of the gnomes.

But a solicitor acting for the deceased estate in southern New South Wales contacted the Australian Gnome Convention seeking advice on how to dispose of the garden ornaments. The convention, established by the Lower Blue Mountains Rotary Club, is held annually in Glenbrook, west of Sydney, and has become the spiritual home for Australia's gnomes.

Convention organiser and "Gnome Master'' David Cook said he did not hesitate in organising the rescue party when contacted about the homeless little folk. "We didn't want to see them put in a skip and taken to the tip and all smashed up,'' Mr Cook said.

Ranging from two-centimetre fridge magnets to 1.5m-high mega-gnomes, the garden fixtures have suffered a degree of wear and tear. "They had been there for a number of years,'' Mr Cook said. "They were all faded. Their red hats were no longer red and all that sort of stuff.''

The gnomes' previous owner lived alone and was known for having a small number of the statues in her front yard, but few locals knew the full extent of her backyard collection. "She had no more than half a dozen gnomes out the front, but no one suspected she had a whole bevy out the back,'' said Bill Price, a Cootamundra Rotarian.

The four-member rescue team joined with Cootamundra locals on Saturday, working for almost four hours to load "every square inch'' of two vehicles and a trailer. The gnomes will be fostered out to various locations across the Blue Mountains but will be reunited next Australia Day for the sixth annual Australian Gnome Convention.

There's a huge photo gallery here.
